The Wine of Astonishment Essay Example for Free
The Wine of Astonishment EssayGod dont reveal you more than you can bear. The opening line of the novel suggests that it is a deeply rooted religious novel. As the story unfolds, we explore the religious journey that the disconcert Spiritual Baptists in Bonasse have to embark on, in efforts to restore their rights to practise their faith. The title of the novel, The Wine of Astonishment can be analysed in two ways. Firstly, the literal translation of The Wine of Astonishment stems from the meanings of the words drink and astonishment. Wine is an alcoholic beverage typically made of fermented grape juice and is usually bitter. Astonishment refers to something unexpected. compounding the meanings, one can deduce that the Wine of Astonishment refers to something bitter and unexpected. As one of the major themes in the novel is struggle, we can interpret the fuddle to ask bitterness the austerenesss and sour experiences the Spiritual Baptists had to withstand and astonishm ent the unexpected. Therefore, the Wine of Astonishment can literally mean an unexpected hardship. Secondly, if analysed from a biblical perspective, the phrase the wine of astonishment is mentioned in sing 603 Thou hast shewed thy people hard things thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment. To David, the psalmist, in Psalm 60, he felt as though God withheld His protection, that God had turned his back on them because when the Israelites were at war away in the North, they were invaded in the south. It appeared as though instead of granting them the wine of blessing, God had rejected them unexpectedly. This was Gods way of testing the faith of his people. He made them endure unexpected hardship to see just how strong they were. In the novel, Eva knows that the trials they experience was Gods challenge to them.It seemed as though God rejected them and showered them with tribulations but real abet comes from God alone and when a situation seems out of control, we can tr ust God to do mighty things. Hence, God made the Spiritual Baptists drink the wine of astonishment to test their faith as a church and in the end, God restored his protection of his people and freed them from the torment they endured in attempts to keep their religion. The books title introduces the reader, to a religious plot that will examine the course of a struggling people.

Types of Wild Tea
Types of Wild TeaIts quite disappointing that while we retain been putting too much attention to the ballyhooed Cheaper euphony Law, we failed to pursue with equal vigor a promising effort to develop medicines which add up from the backyard garden. If we can just put our act to modernizeher, we might be able-bodied to offer our people herb tea remedies that could even be much more effective and wal allow-friendly than the so called cheaper medicines we get from the drug store now.During the administration of President Ramos, in 1992 to be exact, the Department of Health under then Secretary Juan Flavier launched a nationwide Traditional Medicine Program for a period of 6 years, with proficient support from the World Health Organization. According to Roger Lee Mendoza in his A Cost-Benefit Analysis of Legalizing Complementary and Alternative Medicine the said programs most notable work was the identification of 10 (out of 1,500) herbs for their safe (non-toxic) medicinal proper ties. The program clearly paved the way for what should have been follow-up efforts to develop these herbs for their possible therapeutic effects. You can get the list and more details from the website of the Philippine Herbal Medicine.Scientific backgroundOne of the medicinal plants thoroughly tested and clinically proven to have rank in the relief and treatment of various ailments is Tsaang Gubat. Tsaang Gubat belongs to the Carmona borage family family of plants. It has many scientific call. In their study, Forest Starr, Kim Starr, and Lloyd Loope of the United States Geological Survey Biological Resources Division stationed in Maui, Hawaii as published in www.hear.org lists them down in their Latin names Carmona retusa (Vahl) Masamune (Lorence et al. 1995, Wagner et al. 1999) C. microphylla (Lam.) Don Ehretia microphylla Lam. Ehretia buxifolia Roxb. Cordia retusa Vahl (Lorence et al. 1995 Bailey and Bailey 1976 GRIN 2001).In the Philippines, its commonly known as tsaang gubat (wild tea, forest tea. or well-nightimes Philippine tea) But in the provinces, your neighborhood herbalist or plant expert would know it by its names in the local dialects In Luzon Kalabong, Kalimumog, Katdalugod, Maragued, Mara-mara, Taglokot, Talibunog, Tsaang-gubat, Tsa-tsa. In the Visayas Alibungog, SementeAnd in Mindanao Alangitngit, Alingitngit,Truth to tell, tsaang gubat is more known as an ornamental plant than a medicinal herb. It was and still big(a) as bonsai because of its attractive appearance. The Starr research study cited previously mentions the fact that tsaang gubat is a popular ornamental plant cultivated in Hawaii as a hedge or specimen plant. How to identify itWhat exactly does it look like? So you would you be able to tell it apart from other shrubs, it is described as a low, woody plant with several stems. The book Medicinal and Poisonous Plants by de Padua and Bunyapraphatsara says that it grows to about 1 to 4 meters high. Its leaves are small and have da rk, unripe and shiny velocity fold. Because it can be found in secondary forest in low and medium altitude, its called wild. The medicinal property of tsaang gubat comes from its leaves which grow in clusters on short branches, 3-6 cm long, somewhat toothed or lobed near the apex and pointed at the base, short stalked and rough on the upper surface. Tsaang gubat bears small white flowers, axillary, solitary, 2 or 4 on a common stalk. It bears yellow fruits when ripe which are about 4-5 mm in diameter.Whats it safe for?Old folks who most of the time know better, recommend it as a herbal remedy for many ailments. But for a start, its safe to assimilate it as your daily cup of tea for general good health. You dont have to go the forest to get tsaang gubat. It is now available in the form of herbal tea bags and in pills capsules at your local mall and herbal stores. My cursory look at tsaang gubat led me to www.medicalhealthguide.com which reveals that tsaang gubat in fact, has anti -bacterial and anti-allergenic properties. It also has fluoride so its a native mouthwash. For the scientifically minded or just plain skeptics, the same site states that tsaang gubat has been studied for possible anti-allergic property because it contains rosmarinic acid and microphyllone which is believed to control allergy. It goes on to say that some studies also reveal that tsaang gubat leaves also show a mixture of triterpenes- a-amyrin, -amyrin and baurenol and a wide range of bioactivity including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal and antibacterial activities. On the other hand, for those of us who want it utter simply, the website of the Philippine Herbal Medicine enumerates the following ailments that can be relieved by tsaang gubatStomach painsGastroenteritisIntestinal motilityDysenteryDiarrhea or Loose Bowel Movement (LBM)Body cleanser/washAnd in addition, because it is found that its leaves have high fluoride content. tsaang gubat is also used as a graphic mouth wash for stronger teeth and prevent cavities.SidebarPreparing fresh tsaang gubat teaTo prepare tsaang gubat tea, the same website recommends the followingThoroughly wash the leaves of tsaang gubat in running urine. Chop to a desirable size and boil 1 cup of chopped leaves in 2 cups of water. Boil in low heat for 15 to 20 proceedings and drain.Take a cupful ein truth 4 hours for diarrhea, gastroenteritis and stomach pains.Word of caution if the stomachache or diarrhea is not relieved, it is advised that you picture your doctor. The ailment could be caused by something else.In boiling the leaves in water, the article entitled Herbal Medicines Part 1 published on September 14, 2006 in pinoyraket.blogspot.com recommends suggests that you strictly follow these rulesa. Use only enameled container or claypot (palayok), never an aluminum pot.b. A standard glass or cup should contain 240 ml. or 8 fluid ounces of water. This measurement is the same as the content of a bottle or regul ar size softdrink bottle.c. Mix leaves in water before placing on fire.d. As soon as the mixture boils uncover the pot and let boil continuously for 15 minutes. Remember that the mixture should boil uncovered.e. Strain and let cool. You now have what is called decoction. For convenience, you may prepare enough decoction that you can use for several days. Simply adjust the amount of leaves to use according to the amount of water that you will boil. When stored in a thermo pot (termos ), the decoction should last for three days without losing its efficacy. If kept in a refrigerator, the decoction should last up to four days without losing its efficacy. withstand in mind, however, that whether kept in thermo pot or refrigerated the decoction must not be taken anymore when its color has changed or when it has grown molds or fungus.Tsaang gubat v.s. cancer? The latest news on tsaang gubat is that its good for fighting cancer. An article in the Philippine Daily Star reports that a Dr. Gerard Penecilla, a pharmaceutical scientist of the topic Research Council of the Philippines has discovered the potential of two indigenous plants as cure for cancer, the third leading cause of death in the country. He found that banaba and tsaang gubat have high potential in fighting growth and multiplication activities of cancer cells. The report goes on to say that out of the many sample extracts tested, a authentic dosage of tsaang gubat was found effective against cancer cell, the DOST said.It added that the scientist hopes this technique could pave the way for the strong interaction and cooperation among the Filipino chemists, botanists, biologists, physicians and the government research funding institutions as well, in coming up with solid scientific research on medicinal plants that could aid local pharmaceutical companies to produce anticancer medicine at very low cost. And thats exactly our point at the start. If only we can just get our act together and pursue with greater v igor these kinds of initiatives in the schooling of our local herbs, then we are on the right road towards keeping the cost of medical care much lower than we have right now. And come to think of it, these potent herbal remedies are practically just in our own backyards. What these promising research findings of Dr. Penecilla also indicate is that weve just barely scratched the surface on what tsaang gubat and other herbs can do for our health. Further research and test will prove their full potency in fighting more unsafe diseases. For now, when its time for your tea break, go wild for a change over tsaang gubat, the wild tea thats good for you.SourcesHalamang Gamot at Mga Sakit published by Sto. Dangers Of Tasers Misuse By Law Enforcement Officers Criminology Essay
Dangers Of Tasers Mis exercise By Law En withdrawment Officers Criminology EssayThis paper discusses the dangers and punishment of patrol officeh honest-to-goodnessers who demand mis mapd the taser. The taser was created to be a little than lethal machine to help police force officers keep a safe distance between themselves and the person they atomic number 18 trying to torment, and keep serious suffering from occurring. However there ar several situations where the officers get chthonian ones skin using upd this weapon on children, elderly, and handicapped person who did non show aggressive behavior toward them. These weapons were used to punish. The purpose of this paper is to explore the misuse, and address training of the officers to prevent this misuse of the taser. The Dangers of Tasers Misuse by Law Enforcement Officers in the Line of DutyThis paper addresses the dangers when a police officer misuses the taser, which is a defense weapon. Tasers were developed as a new alternative to deadly force for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and jailers to help protect themselves, the suspects, inmates, and civilians. Many law enforcement personnel and suspects take on been injured in the past because of the close proximity of the officer and the person they were detaining. Less-than- lethal weapons were developed to help in decreasing injuries.Since less-than-lethal weapons have been introduced as an alternative to deadly force, police officers have discovered that these weapons were not only effective for detaining suspects, and it could be used for getting nighones attention, or could be used as a way of getting the person to do as instructed. However, approximately law enforcement officers use their less-thanlethal weapons on children, the elderly, and the handicapped. There is still a chance of the person macrocosm injured if the officer is careless with the use of the non-lethal weapons and the risk of injury can be potent ly high. The taser is a type of weapon that is similar in appearance to a conventional firearm, because the body has the same shape as a conventional firearm. Instead of firing bullets, the taser fires two electrodes attached to an energy source designed to incapacitate a person. Examples of the misuse by police officers would be using the taser against someone who is non-threatening or who is already handcuffed. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine the recommendations set forth by the world-wide Association of Chiefs of law (IACP) and jurisprudence decision maker Research Forum (PERF) for the law enforcement use of tasers. When do law enforcement officers, correction officers, and jailers misuse their non-lethal weapons (Tasers) on a civilian, prisoner, or suspect without justification for taser use?If the person is not showing a threat to the officer at that time, should the officer be punished? If the answer is yes, do the organizations in which the officers are employe d have a disciplinarian plan in place to deal with the officer in question, what options do these organizations have, and are the punishments just and fair not only for the officer, simply for the victim as well?Literature ReviewWhen law enforcement officers, correction officers, and jailers misuse their non-lethal weapons than an investigation must be done. Cameras can be a settlement for the misuse of a taser by a police officer. This would help determine whether an investigation should be considered (Anonymous, 2009 Farrell 2009).MacDonald,Kaminski,andSmith (2009) reported that incidents of use of force by police officers consider for less than 2% of the estimated total of police and civilian contacts (official interaction between any person and an officer), the prevalence of injury to civilians and officers in these situations is high (2 out of 8). Police subdivisions in the United States are increasingly providing officers with less-lethal weapons to control suspects who ph ysically resist backtrack.Lee,Vittinghoff,Whiteman,Park,Lau,andTseng, (2009) discuss that police officers consider the taser a safer alternative to firearms. Taser deployment was associated with substantial increase in in-custody sudden death in the early deployment period, with no decrease in firearms deaths. Delong and Thompson, (2009) discuss that many police agencies have set up their own rules and procedure regarding the deployment of the non lethal weapons and the circumstances in which the weapons were deployed. The characteristics of the suspects at the time of deployment, and to dismal the difference between the media and the police in the use of the taser on a suspect.DiscussionLess-Than-Lethal weapons any(prenominal) of the less-than- lethal weapons used by today police officers are the oleoresin capsicum spray (pepper spray), conductive energy devices (tasers), and blunt impact devices (night sticks). These alternative devices help the officer from making physical cont act with the person and limit the injury fact of the officer and the suspect. The night stick was the first less-than- lethal weapon that police had to subdue a suspect with out resorting to deadly force however a suspect could be seriously injured by this weapon. The officers were trained and the nightstick was redesigned with a second handle that protruded from the side of the weapon so it could be used as a grappling weapon as well as a striking weapon. The police officer still had to be in close contact with the person for the nightstick to be effective. Injuries would occur not only to the suspect, but also to the officer.Oleoresin capsicum spray (pepper spray), conductive energy devices (tasers) were the next advancement to be developed for the police officer. Pepper spray is an agent to cause suspects look to water uncontrollable that causes the suspect to stop, it also burns the eyes and throat. The taser was also developed to help the officer to keep a distance between thems elves and sober situations. There have been many other situations in which police officers were able to protect themselves from injury. The situations in which a police officer would use his or her taser in an altercation escape attempt, restraining of the suspect, or when a suspect is showing paranoid and irrational behavior and threat of injury to the suspect or officer are clear. The locations where some officers have used their tasers are while the suspect is in police custody, at the scene of the arrest, or after being handcuffed. Some community who have been tasered have had an underlying health conditions (heart problems, mental illness, or drug use). More than 70 wad have died in the United States and Canada after being strike with a taser. There have been 152 eccentric persons and 23 of these cases have resulted in death and the taser was the contributory factor (Adams Jennison,2007).Cases of Taser MisuseA Nevada legislator propresent a line to necessitate cameras to be mounted to the taser to limit the use of the taser. The Federal Court of Appeals panel made a ruling that a California police officer was not immune from civil litigation when officer Brain McPherson fired his taser at a motorist after a 2005 traffic stop (Anonymous, 2009 Farrell 2009). Law enforcement agencies in the United States stress that built in safe guards ( such as chips that record the time and date of each time the taser are fired) are necessary to sully the potential abuse. These safe guards do not go far enough to prevent officers from abusing their tasers.According to Amnesty International (2004b), there have been reports of inappropriate or abusive use of tasers in various jurisdiction, sometimes involving repeated cycles of electro-shocks on suspects. The evidence suggest that police officers are not using their tasers as a way to avoid using lethal force, but they are using the taser as a routine force to subdue non- complaint individuals who are not posing a threat. In some departments the officers use the taser as a prevalent force tool.Tasers have been used on unruly schoolchildren, unarmed mentally disturbed or intoxicated subjects, and those who were fleeing a minor crime scene. Also, reported victims of police tasering were people who do not follow the police office commands immediately. For example, 12-year old was tasered after fighting with another student on a school bus, and a 14-year old Florida girl and there of her class mates were taser because of fighting (Amnesty International 2004).It seems that todays police officer has converted to the old west mentally of shooting first and asking questions after the fact. This will be shown in this next case of a 40 year old man named Gregory Williams who is a double-leg amputee. According to Patton (2009), Mr. Williams and his wife were having a verbal argument and the police were called. When the police officers arrived at the Williams apartment, the officers free the couple. On e officer talked to Mrs. Williams and the other talked to Mr. Williams who at the time was holding his two year daughter in his lap.Officer Pinnegar certain Mr. Williams that he was under arrest for striking his wife, then Officer Pinnegar tasered him in the ribs. Mr. Williams was then pulled back into his wheelchair by the officer very hard, and was tasered a second time. Williams fell out of his chair and his knickers fell off his body he was handcuff and left on the sidewalk with his genitals exposed for about ten minutes. The next abusive use of tasers was against a Louisiana man what was wanted by police for cocaine charges. This case will show the excessive use of a taser on a suspect however this suspect was already in handcuffs. The Winnfield police had an arrest warrant for Baron Scooter Pikes and were going to arrest him, however the arrest was realized when Officer Nugent became over zealous with the use of his taser, and Mr. Pikes, who did not get to his feet quick eno ugh for the officer.Griffin Fitzpatrick (2008) reported than the Louisiana State Police officer tasered 21 year old Baron Scooter Pikes ball club times after Mr. Pikes was on the ground and handcuffed. The suspect had stopped twitching after seven jolts of 50,000 volts. currently after, Pikes was dead. Dr. Randolph Williams, the Winn Parish coroner, ruled Pikes death as a homicide in June after an extensive study.Safeguards Against Misuse of TasersLaw enforcement agencies all over America, Canada, and other countries are adopting tasers as their less than lethal weapon of choose. This weapon gives the officer 21 feet to incapacitate a suspect at a safe distance. However the main concern is to mark off that officers do not become over zealous with this weapon and causes serious injury or death to the civilian population. The public is seeing and hearing more and more of police officers misusing this new weapon instead of using it when all other alternatives have failed. The aspe ct of the misuse is when officers use the technology on children under 18 years of age, elderly, and handicap persons and on regular citizen who are not showing a violent nature toward the officer. Anonymous (2009) indicated that the Nevada Legislature is proposing a bill that all tasers issued to law enforcement be equipped with a camera. The bill will also include that the use of the taser is only to be used on people who have committed a felony, or who endanger themselves or others. The U. S. Supreme Count has three rules to justify the use of a taser the severity of the crime, whether the suspect posed a serious threat to the officer, and whether the suspect was evading or resisting arrest (Rubin Winton, 2009, p 3). These rules were put in place from previous cases because the stun gun dispenses a measured level of force.According to Farrell (2009) The California Federal Court has ruled that a California police officer was not immune from civil litigation resulting from obscu re use of the controversial weapon. So, therefore, civil remedies are establishedThis ruling was set after a Coronado police officer used his taser on a motorist after stopping him for not wearing a seat belt Although the driver showed irrational behavior the officer should have used more invasive means to take control of the situation. This non lethal weapon needs to be classified in the same way that the officers firearm, pepper spray, and nightstick. Each one of the weapons has rules that scout the officer when the weapon needs to be used these rules should apply to the taser.Taser International Inc. has developed a data port download kit that helps law enforcement officers to have accurate documentation on the use of the taser by their officers by recording the date and time when the officer fired the taser. They also have the camera adhesion that records images and voice for the officer can use this data if accused of misuse. (Rose, 2007), these new attachments my not be aff ordable for some of the smaller departments, and the officers may believe it is not necessary to have because of confidence that their department policy will protect them from litigation. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and Police executive Research Forum (PERF) provided lead lines for the increasing police use of the weapon and the concern of risks and liability. These organizations have developed these guidelines to help the police departments development policies, procedures, and training curricula (Rose, 2007). (See the nine strategies in the Appendix). Each of the nine strategies help address issues that will affect the use of tasers by law enforcement officers. These strategies put emphases on training, testing, and safety for the public. The IACP recommends when a police department plans to acquire electronic defense weapons that they should form a leadership team comprised of management, training, policy, field, and budget staff. The team should addi tionally include members of the community and media representatives legal counsel, medical practitioners and representatives of the governing or concern body (Rose, 2007).The team will help to assess any issue that may arise in the acquisition of the cost, training, liability and evaluation. The taser should be placed in the use of force continuum with guidelines for police officers on the degree of force that is appropriate when responding to the subject (Rose, 2007). A leadership team within a police department will be able to help the individual police officers to remain up to date on new training procedures, new laws created on the use of tasers, and medical training in case of a medical emergency. The leadership team would be able to review each case when a taser is dispatch and to give recommendations of whether the officer needs additional training or if the officer was within the department policy. The leadership team would be able to make a fair assignment on the cost and benefit of the police department having tasers as their secondary defense weapon. The police department and the officers need to be held accountable for the uses of electronic defense devices. Each police officer should be given clearly defined rules and protocols, and relevant and reliable information about the new technology. The police department additionally should gain public acceptance of the new weapons and should implement a community outreach program to inform the people of their community. The community members should be informed of the tasers capability and its effective goal as an alternative of deadly force, the benefit of its cost, and the goal to reduce officer and suspect injury. All police officers should have some emergency medical training to be a first responder in case a suspect has medical problems after being struck by the taser, and in the removal of the darts form sensitive areas. A medically trained officer could provide any medical attention such a CPR, mon itoring the suspect while in custody, and assist in transporting the victim to the nearest hospital or clinic.ConclusionIn conclusion, although the taser has been developed as a defense weapon many police officers have made it their primary weapon of choice and use it inappropriately. The misuse of the weapon has the public and the media come to about whether or not the attitude of todays police officers are serving and protecting the public properly. or are officers using this new defensive weapon to punish people who break the law and who are non-violent just to show them use is in charge. This type of behavior from police officers are causing a lot of concern not only from the communities they serve, but also from the manufacturers that have developed and supply these less-than-lethal weapons to law enforcement agencies. The International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Executive Research Forum have produce guidelines for the law enforcement agencies to follow when a police department decides to add the tasers to their non lethal weapon storehouse.ReferencesAdams, K., Jennison, V.(2007). Business administration is used as a synonym for c go into. judicature is much seen as paper sour and form-filing, but it reaches more widely than that to encompass the coordination of all procedures that enable a product or renovation to be delivered, together with keeping of records that canister be checked to target errors or oppor tunities for improvement. (Business Administration 2009).This sector was chosen because the researcher is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and aspires to know exactly what is needed to become employable. The researcher plans to fulfill this aspiration by first identifying key information regarding this sector in terms of frequent employment trends and graduate opportunities, the employability expertnesss organizations expect from graduates and the enlisting and natural selection methods used by organisations. The research methods used to accomplish the former is explained in detail in the methodology percentage of this report.Second, the findings of the research in terms of the employability skills are and then matched against a personal analysis of the researcher and a gap analysis and career achieve plan formulated. Finally the report concludes with the researcher reflecting on what was learnt from the research experience and the usefulness of th e career action plan for the future.OCCUPATIONAL RESEARCHThis instalment of the report provides a factual reflection of the findings from the research conducted on graduate opportunities in the Business administration/management sector.Terms of ReferenceThis report researches graduate opportunities in the Business administration/management sector. Through a mold of factual and personal reflection it provides information on how can graduates in this field can increase their employability and marketability through personal and skipper development. The report is required to show evidence of the research used for reflection.MethodologyThis report is based on lower-ranking research carried out between February and March 2011. The researcher aims to gather factual up-to-date information on graduate opportunities in the Business administration/management sector in the following areasGeneral employment trends.Opportunities for recent graduates. The skills knowledge and experience requir ed from graduates by employers. How graduates are recruited and selected. The researcher set out to use the case study method for research as this method allows the researcher to investigate a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are non clearly evident, and in which multiple sources of evidence are used (Yin, 1989). However due to difficulties organisationd in completing interviews with companies chosen for the case studies and the puffy number of incomplete questionnaires returned, the researcher had no choice but to complete the report with the use of secondary research only. Using the limited information reach would have compromised the accuracy, reliability and validity of the report. Time constraints prevented the researcher from setting up interviews with other companies and it would have been unethical for the researcher to force respondents to complete the questionnaire or to compensate information. Thus a wide range of secondary research from academic sources were used such as journal articles, books, business databases, newspapers, logical arguments and career websites and general trade and specialist websites. For general employment trends in this sector not only articles were used but up to date statistics as advantageously from reliable sources (The fall in States Depart of constancy, Bureau of Statistics) to maintain accuracy. Information for employment opportunities were found mainly in crease and career websites. The summary provided on the skills, knowledge and experience required from graduates and the recruitment and selection methods was based on online research from six organisations in different sectors ranging from large enterprises to not for profit organisations. Although federation websites provided the majority of information for this section they were not the only source used. The researcher is certified of the limitations of secondary research such as inaccu racy and out of date information, however the researcher attempted to balk this by using reliable sources such as journals and databases and sites that provided up to date information and national statistics.Main FindingsThis section of the report provides key information regarding the Business administration/management sector. Whether the industry is expanding or contracting is vital information for graduates as this directly affects the demand for jobs in fields within the sector. With this knowledge graduates testament be able to make informed decisions, for example, to charter a career in a field that is increment and not declining. In addition, graduates will be able to reflect on their knowledge, skills and experience after gaining information on the employability skills employers are seeking, thereby providing them the opportunity for professional development in areas needed. Furthermore, being aware of the recruitment and selection practices employed by organisations al lows graduates to prepare themselves to get the job they desire.General employment trends in this sectorAdministration and Management are passing broad areas and graduates seeking employment in this sector can get jobs in the goods-producing industries such as manufacturing and construction or the service-providing industries such as wellness care, education and administrative and stomach operate. See section 2.2.2 page 9, figure 3 for a list of graduate jobs in this sector.harmonize to the United States subdivision of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in goods-producing industries has declined since the 1990s. Although overall employment is expected to change little, projected growth among goods-producing industries varies considerably. See Figure 1.This is in contrast to service producing industries the shift in the U.S. economy a government agency from goods-producing in favor of service-providing is expected to continue. Service-providing industries are anticipat ed to generate approximately 14.5 million new wage and net jobs. (United States Department of Labor 2010). See Figure 2.According to these industry trends, graduates who choose jobs in the growing service industry are expected to have a long-term career as opposed to those in goods- producing industry.Industry growth or decline will affect the demand for occupations. Thus if an industry is growing for example the health and services industry then graduates who gain employment in this industry will be able to move up the career ladder from perhaps a junior health administrator to a senior health administrator. However if the manufacturing sector is on the decline then entering this industry as a junior production manager may not be wise as the post may be piteous lived through retrenchment or layoffs.Statistics reveal that employment in management occupations project to grow slowly over the projection period 2008-18, increasing by 5 percent, an addition of 454,300 new jobs and offi ce and administrative support occupations expect to grow by 8 percent, adding 1.8 million new jobs by 2018. (United states Department of Labor 2010).Another recent trend is the demand for graduates from Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). There are an estimated 4.8 million SMEs in the United Kingdom (UK) employing 23.1 million muckle with a combined annual turnover of 3000 billion. (Kewin et al 2010). Thus, graduates who do not wish to work in large corporate have an option and opportunity to work in a different atmosphere as compared to the past. Also in recent years, there has been an increased interest in employability skills by employers. A degree alone is not enough. Employers are looking for more than just technical skills and knowledge of a degree discipline. They particularly value skills such as communication, team working and problem-solving.(Jones, D 2005).In addition, the methods used to advertise jobs are also changing. In the past, it was common for advertisemen ts to be in newspapers, career magazines, career services under universities and spread by word of mouth. However, due to increased technology organisations are putting advertisements on employment websites and using online recruitment agencies. By the tittle-tattle of a button, graduates can access and explore a range on different job opportunities and career information locally and globally as well as apply online for jobs instead of the traditional way by post or hand delivery.Furthermore, there are changes in the methods used for graduate recruitment and selection. Socio economic and political changes as well as developments in information technology have all led to the introduction of new and more train methods of recruitment and selection. (Sackett Lievens 2008 cited in Brianne, M 2008).The roles employers expect graduates to perform are also changing. For example, earlier, the role of the secretary was limited to taking notes from their heads, typing and storing informatio n. However, with the advent of technology in companies and offices, the secretary duties have extended to things that are for the professional and managerial staff. (Kartha, D 2010).Additionally, because the world is now becoming a global market place about occupations require graduates to have a second language as they will be communicating with clients worldwide, for example a sales manager or executive administrative assistants and secretaries.Graduates may have certain skills, interests and objectives, however, they need to take into consideration these industries and employment trends so they can make informed decisions regarding their career choice. The following section will now uncover the range of opportunities procurable to graduates.2.3.2 Opportunities for recent graduatesAll organisations, large or small and across all sectors need administrators, managers and administrative support staff. Thus, graduates can get jobs in the public, private and not for profit sectors, in large corporate and in SMEs. In fact, if graduates do not want to choose the traditional graduate management route self-employment, franchising or branch management could be what they are looking for. Fig 3 shows a list of careers available in this sector.Figure 3. SourceUniversity Career Center. KUCareerHawk.comThe role graduates perform would depend on the organization they are working for in terms of the sector, the organization bodily structure and culture and the leadership styles within the organization. For example in large organisations graduates may perform routine structured roles in a specific area of the job example finance as compared to Small and Medium sized Enterprise (SMEs) who duties may be unstructured and graduates will be involved in all aspects of the organisations work.Employers advertise graduate employment opportunities in newspapers, career magazines and through university career services. However, the most popular form of advertising today is on compan y and university websites, online recruitment agencies and graduate jobs and career services websites such as targetjobs.com.The next section provides information about the employability skills employers seek from graduates.2.3.3 The skills, knowledge and experience requiredLeaving university with a Bachelor Arts degree in Business administration is important in attaining a job in the graduate employment market, however it is not enough. According to Carl Gilleard Chief Executive, Association of Graduate Recruiters 21st century graduates need to demonstrate to employers that they can hit the ground running. In addition to working voiceless to gain a good degree, students should engage in extracurricular activities and obtain work experience in order to develop skills that will make them fall in prepared for the world of work. It is also important for students to become self- aware and develop the confidence to market themselves effectively when the time comes to apply for jobs. ( target jobs.com)Apart from the formal qualifications of a degree which was watertightly desired by five of the six organisations researched employers required graduates to have at least one year experience in the field. In terms of skills, commercial awareness skills, people skills, enthusiasm and motivation and communication skills were deemed to be the most important. The section that follows provide information on recruitment and selection processes used by organisations.2.3.4 How graduates are selectedGraduate recruitment and selection is a process of searching for and obtaining potential job applicants from graduates in sufficient quantity and property so that employers can select the most suitable candidates to fill in their job vacancies .(Beardwell et al., 2004). In practice there is no one best way or commonly agreed procedure on how to recruit and select graduates because different employers have different recruitment and selection methods depending on their operations, s ize and needs. (Sackett and Lievens, 2008).According to the employers in the organisations researched they preferred to recruit graduates through online methods, example via milkround. Other methods roughlytimes used are recruitment brochures, recruitment fairs this method was very popular, recruitment agencies, and to a lesser extent newspapers and magazines. The selection process has changed as organisations are not only using interviews as a means of selecting individuals. In order for individuals to let out their knowledge, skills and abilities the use of assessment centers was most popular in large organisations. The smaller organisations that do not have assessment centers set up used adroitness and psychometric tests.PERSONAL REFLECTIONThis section of the report is based on a personal analysis which is matched against the findings of the research. A career action plan is then developed to for future use.Personal AnalysisDrew and Bingham (2001) define reflection as looking b ack on experience and making sense of it to identify what to do in the future. The following skills were indentified after I did a personal reflection.Communication skillsI enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds. At work I have experience in training On the Job Trainees( OJTs) via workshops and in my second year at the University of the West Indies I coached students on a weekly basis for two modules for a period of six months. I communicate with the public on a daily basis and this has enabled me to strengthen my skill in this area.Presentation SkillsI have experience in giving presentations to small groups in the first two years at university as some of the modules were partly presentation based. Assignment based presentations has allowed me to develop the use of clear and concise language, good planning and organisation and good interaction with the audience.Other SkillsMy work experience throughout the years enabled me to gain extensive experience in the area of c ustomer service. My first part time job in a fast food restaurant as a customer service worker has developed my team building skills. I was promoted to team leader in one year time and I was awarded for having outstanding enthusiausm and motivation skills. As a Secretary I was involved in the preparation of correspondence, reports, plans and budgets. Multitasking was a skill I learnt as a telephone operator whereby I handled six incoming lines with 40 extensions transferring calls to department heads. The position I currently hold requires me to work in a fast paced, hectic environment so I am capable of handling multiple tasks at once. I know how to range job assignments, work independently and interdependently and resolve problems on my own as well as part of a team. I am very organized and detailed oriented. I am the project leader for all incoming projects because I possess good motivation skills and organizational skillsCV Covering garner accessory is a cover letter and CV prepared in response to a job vacancy recently advertised in the macrocosm service sector as a Business Operations Assistant.Gap AnalysisAfter conducting research and conducting a personal analysis I have matched all the skills needed excepting commercial awareness skills. I have plenty experience in the Administration field and I am in the process of obtaining my degree.Apart from theses knowledge skills and experience, I have hands on experience in typing but lack a formal certificate, which are often requested by organisations.Lack of education in terms of possessing a foreign language has always restricted me from taking advantage of opportunities I would homogeneous to apply for. Many times I see a job advertised and I have all the qualification and experience except the ability to speak a foreign languageCareer Action PlanThe definition most often used for Commercial sense is by Christopher Stoakes in his excellent book All You Need to Know about Commercial Awareness. He s tatesAt heart, commercial awareness is about being able to conversation to clients, finding out what they want, why they want it, what they will do with it and what they are prepared to pay, and then delivering it in the way they want. To do that you need to understand how organisations work, the issues they face and the role of people within them.To increase my commercial awareness skills I intend to read not only the newspaper articles but also make business magazines as well. When applying for jobs I also intend to research the company and even prepare a SWOT analysis of the company for two reasons. maiden to let the interviewer know that I have extensive knowledge of the company enabling me a better chance of getting the job and second, to know if the company is one I would really like to work for. Furthermore, I intend to buy the book All You Need to Know about Commercial Awareness by Christopher Stoakes it is selling on Amazon for just $24.27.I have located a business scho ol that offers a short course on typing. The duration is 3 months part time. I intend to take this course as a next step to developing my skills. Having achieved this will better position me to apply for those jobs that require the certificate in typing.Spanish and French are two popular foreign languages, however because I live in the Caribbean Spanish is more often requested by employers. A local university offers introductory intermediate and advanced levels in Spanish courses. The total duration for all terce parts is one year part time. As a part of the course the university in the final stage takes a trip to a Spanish speaking country to give students practical experience in the field in real live settings. I also intend to take this course. Appendix 3 is a summary of a career action plan I developed.CONCLUSIONHaving completed this exercise has made me aware of available opportunities I never knew existed in this sector. Having knowledge of the recent trends and developments and future trends in this sector will now enable me to make more informed decisions when applying for positions in the job market. Also I was not aware of commercial awareness skills until I did this report, I never even knew that a skill like this existed. Furthermore identifying my strong and weak areas gave me a sense of self fulfillment and now I know exactly what steps I had to take to develop them.Drawing up a career action plan allows me to see exactly how long it will take me to achieve my career goals and I am enthusiastic to start. I intend to continuously keep up to date with trends in the sector and always keep updating my career action plan. I am super happy that I did this module. It really helped me personally and professionally.REFERENCESBeardwell, I., Holden, L. and Claydon, T. (2004), Human Resource Management, 4th ed., Prentice Hall, Harlow.Business Administration (2009). Hinduism :: essays research papers
Hinduism The underlying concern of the Upanishads is the nature of Brahman, the universal soul and the fundamental doctrine expounded is the identity of atman, or the innermost soul of each individual, with Brahman. Formulationsof this doctrinal trueness are stressed throughout the Upanishadic writingsThe Upanishads are the most important portion of the Vedas. The Upanishads contain the essence or the knowledge portion of the Vedas. The philosophy of the Upanishads is sublime, profound, sumptuous and soul-stirring. The Upanishads speak of the identity of the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. They reveal the most subtle and deep spiritual truths. The Upanishadic period prepared the ground for the development of thinking(prenominal) ideas, scientific observation and advanced study in the fields of mathematics, logic and the physical sciences. It also cleared the way for a secular and more than clement approach in the realm of social relations and government. Brahmin orthodoxy a nd ideas of ritual purity were ch eachenged and confronted. The conceit of god in Upanishadic thinking was quite different from the more common definition of god as creator and dispensor of reward and punishment. The Upanishadic concept of god was more abstract and subtle. It postulated the doctrine of a universal soul - that embraced all physical beings. All life emanated from this universal soul and death simply caused individual manifestations of the soul to merge or mingle back with the universal soul. The concept of a universal soul was illustrated through analogies from natural phenomenon. As the bees make honey by collecting the juices of distant trees, and reduce the juice into one form. And as these juices have no discrimination, so that they might say, I am the juice of this tree or that, in the same manner, all these creatures, when they have become integrated in the True, know not that they are merged in the True. . . .The name of Krishna refers to the Supreme Personali ty of Godhead, whose spiritual form is eternal and full of knowledge and bliss. This is sustain in the following verse of MahabharataThe word krs is the attractive feature of the Lords existence, and na means spiritual pleasure.

Which heroine do you prefer and how do events throughout the books :: Free Essay Writer
Which heroine do you prefer and how do events throughout the books affect your opinion of them - Bridget Jones and Emma.Which heroine do you prefer and how do events throughout the booksaffect your opinion of them. The cardinal heroines, Bridget Jones and Emma are obviously quite differentin their attitudes to love and society as a whole. However, I thinkthat in ways they are twain likeable characters. The events that occurthrough the novels have an effect on the readers opinions of theheroines and can weaken or strengthen these opinions. Austen andFielding both use humour in the books well which is probably why theheroines are both seen as being comical at times or as is the case inBridget Jones Diary, much often than not.In Jane Austens novel Emma, the heroine Emma is introduced to thereader at the very beginning of chapter 1. We instantly form anopinion of Emma as she is described as,handsome, clever and rich, with a thriving home and happydisposition and had lived nearly twent y-one years with very little todistress or vex her.The reader forms an opinion that Emma has a pampered lifestyle. We in addition learn she is a keen matchmaker and brought together her governessMiss Taylor with Mr Weston. I think the reader would perceive Emma tobe very interested in her friends lives and maybe even a littlemeddling in them. The reader is also informed of the real evils ofEmma being the power of having rather too much her bear way, and adisposition too think a little too well of herself. I think that thereader would not particularly like Emma because she seems to be tooself-assured and interested in other peoples business at this stage. However, the reader is often told of Emma as being a compassionatecharacter by the way she talks about Mr Weston, but this could also beviewed as quite patronising as well,Mr Weston is such a good-humoured, pleasant, excellent man, that hegood deserves a good wifeI then began to feel that Emma believed the matchmaking was for herfr iends benefit and not herself. Although she did speak inpatronising way about Mr Weston I do not think Emma realised how oftenshe made it seem that she felt herself superior to her friends bypatronising them. Emma could also be described as nave or foolish. She often involves herself too much in the lives of other andconsequently tries to force relationships that were never meant to be,such as that between Mr Elton and Harriet Smith.
